In 2024 the Government of Palau endorsed the country's national framework for inter-island biosecurity (IIB framework).

The first of it's kind in the Pacific islands' region, the IIB framework provides flexible options for the Palau States to create and implement inter-island biosecurity. Some Palau States already have biosecurity plans, including Kayangel and the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon (Koror).

These plans are being revised by the INSPIRE project to incorporate the IIB framework, and links to the Palau Protected Areas Network management plans. These revised plans will remain works-in-progress as the INSPIRE project progresses, so that lessons learned can be incorporated, which will further inform the implementation of the IIB framework for other States in Palau.

  • Revised Rock Islands Southern Lagoon Biosecurity Plan 27 February 2025

Key members of the INSPIRE Palau implementation team are the the inter-island biosecurity (IIB) cohort, made up of Protected Areas Network (PAN) rangers and biosecurity officers from Kayangel and conservation and law enforcement officers from Koror.

The INSPIRE web pages are hosted by Pacific Biosecurity on behalf of the Palau Conservation Society.
