Yellow crazy ants have been reported to cause major problems in the outer islands of Tuvalu. These islands are very remote and difficult to get to, with no air services, and ferry schedules frequently disrupted by poor weather. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), are helping Tuvalu deal with these yellow crazy ant problems.
In 2024 Monica worked with the Tuvalu Agriculture Department, Live and Learn (a Tuvalu non-government organisation), Tokialofa (the Funafuti farmer's association) and FAO to develop a survey guide for invasive ants in Tuvalu. Live and Learn has been using this guide to assist them with surveying the outer islands, so that appropriate management options can be selected for each situation. |
